Ace in the Hole is a strategic board game designed for two players. The game features an eight-by-eight square board with eight "captured" squares at each end. Each player commands a set of eight pawns, with the Red player possessing pawns including the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of Diamonds, as well as the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of Hearts. The Black player holds pawns comprising the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of Spades, along with the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of Clubs.
To set up the game, players arrange their pawns on designated home squares and receive a deck of cards (red for Red player, black for Black player) excluding Jokers. Players draw three cards at the start of the game, and the Red player takes the first turn.
Moves in the game are dictated by the cards played. Cards 2 through 7 allow movement of pawns by a corresponding number of squares in any direction, while cards 8, 9, and 10 have special moves resembling the Knight's movement in chess. Face cards can move their corresponding pawn one square in any direction and have the ability to liberate a captured pawn.
Players can burn a card during their turn if no viable moves are available, and capturing an opponent's pawn is achieved by landing on the square occupied by that pawn. The game offers two ways to win: capturing both of the opponent's Aces or exhausting all cards in both players' decks while having the highest accumulated points from captured pawns.
