51st State - Ruins of the Past, Foundation of the Future

Ashes, rust, and ambition. Rebuild civilization where the old world once stood.

Rising from the Ashes

Many years have passed since the catastrophe that destroyed the world as it once was. In the place of the former United States, dozens of independent territories have emerged, each struggling to survive under its own rules. Some rely on the remnants of pre-war technology, others build their economies through trade, while the strongest seek dominance by force. Created by Portal Games, the publisher behind Neuroshima Hex! 3.0, Robinson Crusoe, Imperial Settlers, and Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game, 51st State throws players into a harsh struggle for survival and expansion.

In 51st State, you take command of one of four unique factions, each offering its own approach to rebuilding civilization. Regardless of your choice, every journey begins with a modest settlement and scarce resources. Step by step, you will expand your influence, explore new territories, recruit allies, and transform scattered structures into a thriving and efficient state.

The ultimate objective remains the same - to build the most successful society in the new world. How you achieve it, however, is entirely up to you, making every game a fresh challenge filled with new opportunities for experimentation.

The Gears of a New World

At the heart of 51st State lies a clever system in which nearly every card can be used in several different ways. A newly discovered location can become a permanent building, be turned into a trade agreement, or be dismantled for an immediate benefit. The very same card can serve completely different purposes depending on your current strategy and the evolving state of the game.

As the game progresses, individual cards gradually come together to form a powerful production engine. Some generate a steady flow of resources, others create new scoring opportunities, while many strengthen existing combinations. Over time, your humble settlement evolves into a sophisticated economic network where success depends on how efficiently every element works together.

This constant need to make meaningful choices ensures that no two games ever feel alike. In one session, peaceful economic development may prove the strongest path to victory. In another, aggressive trading or carefully timed destruction of key locations may provide the decisive advantage. There are no universal solutions - every game demands a different approach.

The Race for Power

Expanding your state in 51st State inevitably brings you into conflict with neighboring factions. Player interaction revolves around a delicate balance between cooperation and aggression. You may use an opponent's open production to obtain valuable goods while rewarding them with an additional worker, or choose the harsher alternative - launching a raid. Break through an opponent's defenses, reduce one of their locations to ruins, and disrupt their plans. Interestingly, even the defender can benefit, as ruined locations become universal construction sites that can immediately be rebuilt into entirely new structures.

Hoarding is simply not an option in 51st State. At the end of every round, all unused basic resources are permanently discarded. This constant pressure forces players to keep their economy moving, turning every session into a tense race for efficiency. The final countdown begins the moment any player reaches the 25-point threshold.

Those who prefer to conquer the wasteland alone will find a completely different experience in the solo mode. The Virtual Player is not a traditional engine-building opponent but an unforgiving force of destruction. Each turn, it demolishes your locations whenever matching cards appear or claims your Contact cards for victory points. To overcome this relentless challenge and earn a prestigious place on the achievement leaderboard, you will need to rebuild quickly and extract the maximum value from every remaining resource.

Triumph Among the Ruins

51st State is a masterclass in crisis management, where victory belongs not to the strongest, but to the most resourceful. Turning scarce resources into victory points and using smoldering ruins as the foundation for future growth makes it one of the standout card-driven strategy games in the genre. Portal Games has created a world where the harsh philosophy of the wasteland blends seamlessly with deep and rewarding engine-building mechanics.

Who has what it takes to rebuild civilization from the ruins of the old world:

  • Fans of engine-building Eurogames.
  • Players who enjoy card combinations and efficient resource management.
  • Those who like discovering new strategies in every game.
  • Anyone who appreciates high replayability and strategic variety.
  • Players eager to build a new nation among the ruins of a post-apocalyptic world.
  • Solo players looking for a challenging and rewarding experience.
