Aqualuma - Light Against Darkness in a Deep-Sea Strategy

Secrets of the Dark Waters

Where light is not an everyday given, but a condition for survival

Aqualuma is a cooperative strategy board game that takes players into a bioluminescent underwater world, designed by Michael Luu and published by SPIEL DAS! The game supports 1-4 players and features an average playtime of 30-45 minutes.

Players embark on a journey through five unique underwater kingdoms, where ancient harmony has been disrupted by a mysterious dark mist. Working together, the heroes must collect light orbs and restore illumination to these lost worlds - otherwise, darkness will consume all life beneath the waves.

From the outset, the game establishes a clear thematic framework: light versus darkness, order versus decay. At the same time, it avoids overwhelming players with complex rules or excessive subsystems. The entry remains approachable, yet from the very first turns it becomes clear that beneath the visual elegance lies a cooperative structure that demands careful planning.

Aqualuma feels equally confident as a family game and as an experience for more seasoned players. Scalable difficulty and modular setup allow the game to adapt to the group’s skill level without losing its core idea - constant pressure and the need to act together during group play.

Beneath the Waterline

At the heart of Aqualuma is dice placement. Each round, players draw from a shared pool of dice with different values and colors, placing them onto dedicated action lanes linked to the underwater realms. Each lane comes with its own conditions and requirements, forcing the team to carefully consider turn order and action priorities.

Placing a die almost always carries multiple consequences. It may bring players closer to cleansing a region, trigger a beneficial effect, or help acquire light orbs needed to progress toward victory. However, every die spent also means fewer resources elsewhere, increasing the risk of darkness spreading across the board.

Additional depth is provided by asymmetric character abilities. Each guardian interacts with dice, light, or darkness in a unique way.

Magic cards deserve special attention. They give players tools to adjust unfavorable rolls, redistribute resources, or respond to emerging threats. Using them too early removes a safety net for the later stages of the game. Leaving them unused risks missing the moment when they could turn the situation around. Managing these cards becomes an important part of the overall strategic plan.

From a strategic perspective, Aqualuma revolves around a constant choice between advancement and containment. Players may focus on rapid light collection and pushing toward the endgame, but ignoring the darkness almost always leads to a sharp deterioration of the situation. Conversely, overly cautious play risks dragging the game out and leaving the team without enough time or resources.

Communication is the key factor for success. With all resources shared and actions tightly interconnected, spontaneous or uncoordinated moves often trigger a chain reaction of problems.

Echoes of the Deep

Aqualuma delivers an engaging cooperative experience where strategy and mechanics move in the same direction. Accessible rules and an appealing visual world make it a strong choice, while high replayability stands out as one of its major strengths. Strategic depth does not reveal itself immediately, instead emerging as players become familiar with card combinations, unique hero abilities, and interactions between the realms.

The pacing follows a clear arc. The opening allows room for experimentation, the midgame demands increasingly precise decisions, and the finale often turns into a sequence of critical turns where the cost of every mistake is especially high. This creates a cohesive and complete gameplay experience.

The visual presentation supports readability. Light and darkness are not merely decorative elements - they help players quickly assess the state of the game.

Above all, the game is best suited for groups that enjoy team discussion and shared responsibility for the outcome. Listening to one another, planning ahead, and reaching compromises are essential parts of play.

Back to the Surface

Who should hold their breath:

  • Fans of true cooperative play
All decisions are interconnected. Individual play does not work here.

  • Players who value strategy under time pressure
Darkness grows constantly, forcing choices between risk and control.

  • Those who prefer manageable randomness
Dice introduce uncertainty, but outcomes depend on decisions rather than luck.

  • Groups that enjoy discussing and planning their turns
The game rewards team thinking and coordinated round planning.

  • Families with older children
Clear rules combine with sufficient strategic depth.

  • Solo players

Aqualuma is a story about light returning to places where it has almost disappeared. Dive into the underwater world, unite your efforts, and prove that even in the darkest depths, your team still has a chance to prevail.
