For the Gods! - A Journey Across the Aegean Sea in Pursuit of Divine Glory

Sail the Aegean Sea, build towering temples, and compete for the favor of the gods of Olympus

Beneath the Eyes of Olympus

A new project from Mighty Boards titled For the Gods! invites players to lead the construction of sacred temples across the islands of the Aegean Sea. Designers Trevor Benjamin, Brett J. Gilbert, and David Thompson have created a dynamic strategy game for 2-4 players, offering fast-paced sessions that last up to 45 minutes.

At the core of the gameplay lies a bag-building mechanic: each turn, players draw five stones from their bag, and the number of pips on those stones determines their movement and construction capabilities. Players sail their ships between harbors, lay foundations, and raise ever taller structures while competing for dominance in every region of the archipelago.

The god stones add a significant layer of depth to the experience. By dedicating a temple to Olympus, players activate powerful abilities capable of turning the tide of the game - from instantly moving to any harbor to reinforcing positions with additional foundation blocks. Victory depends not only on fortunate draws, but also on the ability to seize key locations at the right moment, as only the tallest temples will claim the valuable Glory tokens.

The game combines the visual satisfaction of growing temple structures with sharp tactical decision-making.

When the Gods Decide Fate

In For the Gods!, you are not merely a builder, but a seafarer guided by fate itself. The mechanical heart of the game - the bag of stones - represents shifting fortune, as each turn players draw five artifacts that shape their possibilities. Crossing the azure waters of the Aegean Sea requires sacrifice, forcing players to discard stones for every sea route traveled.

Yet true mastery reveals itself within the harbors. Here, players construct towering temple columns while carefully following the ranks of their stones - from humble foundations to majestic three-pip tiers reaching toward the heavens.

The climax of construction comes through the invocation of the Olympian gods. Placing a divine stone atop a temple not only crowns the structure with an elegant cornice, but also grants access to unique god powers. Poseidon grants your ship an instant leap across the archipelago, while Zeus strengthens the foundations of all your sanctuaries on the island.

However, time itself is a limited resource. The moment one player's bag can no longer sustain the flow of stones, the age of construction comes to an end. In the final reckoning, only those whose temples rise highest above the horizon will claim the precious gold glory tokens.

An Archipelago of Endless Rivalry

For the Gods! is built around an ongoing struggle for territory and momentum. From the opening rounds, it becomes clear that there are not enough safe and uncontested regions for everyone.

Early expansion allows players to secure divine abilities and establish influence across the islands more quickly, but overextending can easily lead to resource shortages and the loss of flexibility. Players must constantly balance the number of temples they control against the quality of those structures.

The stone rank system adds another layer of tactical depth. If two temples share the same height, the advantage goes to the one built with higher-ranked stones. This creates constant tension between rapid expansion and preparing stronger combinations for the later stages of the game.

The gods themselves dramatically alter the rhythm of play. Some powers provide immediate advantages, while others reveal their true strength closer to the finale. Zeus and Hephaestus reinforce temple foundations to increase their height, while Hestia bends the usual building rules by allowing different stone ranks to coexist within the same temple.

Timing also plays a critical role. Sometimes dedicating a temple early for momentum is the best option, while in other situations holding a divine power for a decisive late-game swing becomes the stronger strategy.

Although direct combat is absent, interaction between players remains constant. Everyone competes for valuable regions, disrupts rival ambitions, and forces opponents to adapt their plans with nearly every turn.
