HISPANIA: Prove Your Valor in Rome’s Greatest War!

Conquer the Wilds and Forge Your Legacy in the Roman Empire's Final Frontier

A Game Worthy of Caesar

I am Gaius Sempronius Tuditanus, praetor of Hispania Citerior.

In 197 BC, the Senate granted me command over these lands, but I quickly realized: Hispania is no mere prize. It is a trial for the strongest, the most resolute, and the bravest.

After Carthage fell, we thought conquering these lands would be an easy task. We believed that the final blow against Carthage would be the culmination of all our struggles. But we were gravely mistaken. The so-called barbarians we had dismissed as scattered, disorganized forces proved to be fierce and cunning. They fought for every inch of soil, every fortress, every mountain trail.

We expected to face organized armies, but instead, we encountered a people for whom war was a way of life.

Now it’s your turn to lead the Roman legions. Can you finish what took us two centuries to almost achieve? Will you accomplish what even Augustus could barely do?

A Conquest That Became a Trial: Rome vs. the Wilds of Spain

After Hannibal’s defeat and the destruction of Carthage, Rome celebrated its victory. But victors often forget what lies ahead. Drunk on triumph, the Senate decided it was time for Rome to expand its borders even further west.

Our first targets were the lands of Hispania Citerior and Ulterior — former Carthaginian territories.

We Romans pride ourselves on order and discipline. Our legions are a well-oiled machine, honed through battles against Pyrrhus, the Gauls, and even Hannibal himself. But Hispania was different. Here, there was no single enemy to crush in a decisive battle. Here, there were mountain tribes for whom war was a way of life. These people didn’t just fight for land; they fought for their very existence.

The Peoples Who Defied Rome

The Iberian tribes didn’t have a single ruler, but they shared one thing: a fierce hatred of invaders. These tribes were proud, fierce, and willing to die for their land.

The Ilergertes

Cunning and treacherous, they lured Roman legions into narrow gorges, setting deadly ambushes. The land itself became a weapon against us, with every pass, every gorge, a trap.

The Celtiberians

Ferocious warriors who saw death in battle as the highest honor. For them, war was a matter of pride, and they fought with a deadly resolve, seeking nothing less than glory in the face of death.

The Lusitanians

Masters of guerrilla warfare, they made swift, punishing raids that devastated entire Roman provinces. Their attacks were relentless, striking when least expected, and their brutal tactics kept our legions on edge.

The Cantabrians

The last free people of Hispania, they fought so desperately that even Augustus himself barely subdued them. The Cantabrians would not yield easily, and their tenacity became a legend.

200 Years of Struggle for Hispania

200 years of bloodshed. 200 years of relentless conflict.

The conquest of Hispania proved to be one of Rome's toughest and longest military campaigns. After Carthage's fall, the Senate believed the Iberian Peninsula would easily fall into Roman hands. But they were wrong. The Iberian tribes, including the Celtiberians, Lusitanians, and Cantabrians, fought fiercely to protect their land.

The Romans were faced with constant resistance from these tribes, who used guerrilla tactics and ambushes to inflict heavy losses on the legions. The Romans sent many generals and armies, but they could not break the spirit of the Iberians. Generals like Scipio and Pompey, though successful in other campaigns, struggled in the rugged mountains of Hispania. Thousands of Roman soldiers died in the harsh terrain, and many praetors and consuls fell in battle.

It wasn't until Augustus, the first emperor, that Rome finally subdued Hispania. His strategic use of divide-and-conquer tactics helped turn the tide, and in 19 BC, the Cantabrians, the last great resistance, were defeated. But the cost was enormous—decades of war, countless lives lost, and the weakening of Rome’s resources.

Now, it's your turn to lead the final conquest of these wild lands. Will you succeed where so many before you failed? The challenge is yours to face.

You Are Rome’s General

HISPANIA is not just a board game. It’s a strategic challenge where you will command Rome’s legions in the conquest of an unconquerable land. You will make decisions that shape the fate of entire legions, thousands of soldiers, and perhaps the Roman Empire itself.

You will face difficult choices that determine the future of your campaign:

  • Where will you deploy your troops? In the mountain strongholds of the Celtiberians, who defend their homeland with blood and steel, or in the fertile valleys of the Lusitanians, which provide abundant resources, but also hide danger?

  • When will you build roads? Without roads, legions move slowly, giving the enemy a chance to strike. But building roads consumes precious resources that could be used for other purposes.

  • Will you storm a city or lay siege? A direct assault is riskier but faster, while a siege will take time but is safer for your forces.

Dynamic Gameplay

Every turn represents years of war, and time slips away faster than you realize. The fate of your empire is in your hands, and every choice matters.

  • Revolts will erupt without warning. Delay, and "pacified" provinces may rise against you once more.

  • Resources are scarce. Denarii, legions, praetors — every decision counts.

  • Historical events will disrupt your plans. These events will force you to adapt your strategies and face new, unforeseen challenges.

Can you do what even Augustus barely achieved?
