Mycelium - Chronicles of the Forest Floor

Where the forest seems quiet, a struggle rages beneath the surface

Awakening the Colony

Mycelium is a strategic board game where players command colonies of mushlings - small fungal creatures linked by a shared mycelial network. Players expand their reach, compete for scarce resources, and adapt to shifting conditions as the forest changes around them. The first to collect ten nutrients claims victory, but every step toward that goal is contested.

The game is designed for 2-4 players and plays in approximately 1h - 2.5h.

At its core, game is built around the idea of a hidden world, where every path and every node in the network matters. Players take turns developing their own mycelium, placing mushlings, playing ability cards, and responding to events that determine when and where resources appear.

The central mechanic of Mycelium is network building and control. By expanding mycelial paths, players gain access to new sources of nutrients and create routes for their gatherers. Mushling placement echoes worker placement, but with a crucial twist: at the end of each turn, all gatherers return to the colony, and planning begins again from scratch for the next round.

Cards play a critical role in shaping the game. They allow players to interfere with opponents’ plans, alter the order of events, destroy or block paths, and strengthen their own economy.

Silent Expansion

Mycelium is not about rigid, long-term plans. Even a perfectly constructed network can be disrupted by the actions of other players or by the effects of events. As a result, the game rewards flexibility and the ability to shift strategies on the fly.

Aggressive play is just as viable as careful, calculated growth. Passive play, on the other hand, is almost always punished - ignoring the actions of others at the table is not an option.

The game delivers a dense, tense experience without overwhelming players with excessive rules. It is not a light family game, but it is also far from a hardcore simulation.

Who will want to spread their spores and claim the underground forest:

  • fans of active interaction and competition for shared space;

  • players drawn to network-building and area control;

  • those ready to make constant decisions and adapt under pressure.

Those looking for a calm, isolated experience are unlikely to find what they seek here.

Mycelium is a strategy game about a hidden war beneath the forest floor, where every turn can shift the balance of power.
